Terdengar suara misterius di wilayah paling terpencil di muka Bumi. Ilmuwan bingung sumbernya dari mana.
Tempat itu tak lain bernama Point Nemo. Jarak terdekat Point Nemo dengan daratan adalah 2.689 kilometer.
Lokasinya yang sangat terpencil membuat Point Nemo sebagai lokasi pembuangan “sampah” luar angkasa seperti satelit yang sudah tidak digunakan. Misalnya stasiun luar angkasa milik Rusia yang bernama Mir, dijatuhkan di Point Nemo saat dipensiunkan.
Point Nemo ternyata juga menyimpan sebuah misteri yang sampai saat ini belum terpecahkan.
Pada 1997, Badan Lautan dan Atmosfer Amerika Serikat (NOAA) mendeteksi suara frekuensi sangat rendah di titik tersebut. Suara lantang tersebut ditangkap oleh hydrophones yang diposisikan di beberapa tempat di Samudra Pasifik.
Saking kerasnya suara yang berasal dari Point Nemo, mikrofon bawah laut yang jaraknya 4.800 kilometer dari titik tersebut turut menangkapnya.
Sebagian peneliti, seperti Chris Fox dari NOAA menduga suara yang kemudian disebut sebagai “bloop” tersebut, disebabkan oleh makhluk laut.
“Banyak hal yang membuat suara di bawah sana. Paus, lumba-lumba, dan ikan, bergema di seluruh Bumi,” kata Fox kepada CNN seperti dikutip oleh IFL Science, Kamis (19/12/2024).
Karena tidak ada binatang laut yang bisa memproduksi suara sekeras “bloop”, beberapa ahli menduga ada cumi raksasa atau monster laut lain yang hidup di Point Nemo.
Namun, Fox juga punya penjelasan alternatif. “Saya menduga ini terkait dengan es yang patah [ice calving]. Suaranya selalu berasal dari selatan. Kami curiga sumbernya es di pesisir Antartika, dalam hal ini suaranya sangat keras.”
NOAA pernah mendeteksi suara serupa dengan “bloop” sebelumnya, bahkan mereka menggunakannya untuk memantau gunung es A53 yang rontok.
“Suara yang direkam pada musim panas 1997 konsisten dengan gempa es yang disebabkan oleh bongkahan es besar yang retak dan patah,” menurut penjelasan Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.
